[CCBC-Net] 2007Caldecott Award

I shared Flotsam to end my Caldecott unit with 1st and 2nd graders. They couldn't wait to see who won! Instead of just showing the pictures, I
"told" a story to them based on the pictures. It was so much fun to hear the gasps of the kids as I turned the next page so they could see the next picture that came from the camera. All of the classes wanted me to
"read" it again to them. They understood that it was a circle story...and that there could be more pictures on the camera when the child at the end found it washing ashore. The kids brainstormed some other things that might be seen in the pictures of the next book (if there would be one). Even the parent volunteers and teachers became involved in the story. I noticed that my retelling changed a bit with each class as I took in their responses and "tweaked" my story. I think if I just showed the pictures, the response would not have been as positive. The book now has a long waiting list of kids who want to check it out to tell their own story.

My 4th graders also really liked Flotsam and were delighted that it won the Medal. I showed it to the whole class a while ago not knowing if they'd like it or not, but they were fascinated. I also wondered if I could even manage to "read" it with a whole class, but it worked somehow, perhaps because they were so into it. And so, given the different response of Robin's 2nd graders, I wonder if this is a wordless picture book for older kids perhaps?

Kathy, did you notice any difference between the younger and older kids in their responses to the book? Or has anyone else?

Monica

master watercolor artist. I shared this with my class in galley and later as a finished book and I have been surprised at how uninterested they are in it. These are second graders who are used to looking at illustrations in some detail, so I was surprised with their relative lack of enthusiasm. They enjoyed it the first time through, but have not shown the excitement I expected they would.
