The Red Shoe will be published in the USA 2007 by Roaring Brook Press.
I agree with Mike on most of his favourite books, especially Bye, Beautiful and Notes from the Teenage Underground.
I'd also add Melina Marchetta's "On the Jellicoe Road", a novel which comes as a complete departure from her previous bildungsromans "Looking for Alibrandi" and "Saving Francesca". It's a much tougher, darker book, and extremely ambitious structurally and in terms of disparate plot elements and characters. I've been meaning to reread it in order to blog about it?perhaps over the Christmas break.
I also enjoyed THE HAPPINESS OF KATI, written by Jane Vejjajiva, translated by Prudence Borthwick. This book, translated from the Thai is a beautifully written story of family, grief and loss, and a lovely insight into a culture we rarely have the opportunity to read about.
Also favourites this year?"The Pinhoe Egg" (Diana Wynne Jones back on top form), "Something Invisible" by Siobhan Parkinson, "Keeper" by Mal Peet (not a 2006 title but published locally here this year and the first time I'd read this stunning book), "Framed" by Frank Cottrell Boyce.
