"However, Conor will not read any book with a jacket that is pink or features a girl, so there were some books whose pleasures he refused, including my absolute favorite, Katherine Sturtevant's A True and Faithful Narrative." (from Sue Corbett's Miami Herald column.) Mine too! Meg's romance is in keeping with the time period (she describes herself, rightly, as "practical" when considering her future), there is her grappling with how to engage her readers while still being truthful as a writer, and her efforts to understand Edward's description of his time with the Algerians who live so completely differently from her. Wonderful heroine; wonderful book.

Many of my favorites have already been mentioned, most of which have gotten plenty of accolades, but one I want to be sure doesn't slip below the radar is Penda Diakite's I Lost My Tooth in Africa illustrated by Baba Wague Diakite. On my blog I wrote, "I spent some time in Bamako during my time in Africa and the images and events that Penda and her sister experience feel totally authentic to me. They are small ones, simple elements of daily life, but beautiful ones too. This is a book that helps bridge the chasm between Africa and America for children in a delightful way."

I don't believe I've yet seen mention (and my apologies if I'm wrong) of Catherine Thimmesh's Team Moon. What makes this book stand out for me is the author's voice. Her enthusiasm and excitement for her subject is contagious.

I'm also a fan of Adam Rex's Frankenstein Makes a Sandwich. My 4th graders enjoyed it although I do admit I did need to provide some context for some of the jokes. (Can you believe they didn't know
"It's a Small World"?!!)

Lastly, there is that 2006 replacement for Nancy Drew --- the one and only Kiki Strike! Kirsten Miller's debut is a hit in my classroom --- my high-level girl readers love it. I'm guessing and hoping that we are going to hear more about Kiki (and the Irregulars).
