These are my favorites from 2006
Baby Shoes Written by Dashka Slater. Illustrated by Hiroe Nakata. Bloombury ($15.95) Ages 2-4
"Baby says, 'Uh-oh!'/ Mama says, 'Oh, no!' / But those shoes just go, go, go." is the infectious refrain. This is a blissful meditation on the delight of adding the colors of an outing- chalk, grass stains, juice, and yellow paint to the brand-new canvas of shiny new white shoes.
CHEEP! CHEEP! Cheep! Cheep! by Julie Stiegemeyer, Carol Baicker-Mckee. Bloomsbury (9.95) Ages 2+ Three fluffy yellow chicks witness the hatching of an egg on heavy board stock. In just a few rhyming words like cheep and sleep the chicks conveys a range of emotions and thoughts.
BEST BEST FRIENDS Written and illustrated by Margaret Chodos-Irvine. Harcourt ($16) Ages 3+ Preschoolers Clare and Mary are best friends. They sit together at story time and they play outside together. When Mary becomes jealous of attention that Mary receives on her birthday, they find a way to work it out. Chodos-Irvine won a Caldecott Honor for her last book about a little girl, Ella Sarah Gets Dressed.
Duck and Goose Written and Illustrated by Tad Hills. Schwartz and Wade ($14.95) Ages 4+ Duck and Goose find a large round spotted egg. They both lay claim to it. Duck saw it first. Goose touched it first. They become friends while they both care for and imagine a future for the mysterious arrival. Young listeners will enjoy knowing from the beginning that the round object is really a large brightly colored ball.
Hippo! No, Rhino! Written and Illustrated by Jeff Newman. Little, Brown ($15.99) Ages 3+ An absent-minded zoo keeper places the Hippo sign in front the rhino's enclosure. Ignorant visitors mistake him for a hippo even though the youngest reader can plainly see and say, "No, rhino!"
NOT A BOX Written and illustrated by Antoinette Portis. HarperCollins ($12.95) A rabbit imagines that a brown cardboard box transforms him or her into a mountain climber, a firefighter, a robot, a pirate and an adventurer. Portis combines the imagination of Harold's Purple Crayon with the humor of Don't Let the Pigeon Drivethe Bus.
The Adventures of Polo Written and illustrated by R?gis Faller. Roaring Brook ($16.95) Ages 4+ This wordless picture book in a comic book format depicts the fantastic voyage of a dapper dog's extraordinary journeys above and below water. The great charm of Polo is its accessible story that even pre-readers can tell aloud. This is a well-paced drama of impressive page turns and sweet surprises. Houndsley and Catina Written by James Howe. Illustrated by Marie-Louise Gay. Candlewick ($14.99) Ages 6+ In three short, quietly humorous chapters, a dog and a cat find that although they may not get famous being a great cook or an amazing writer, they are good at being friends and watching fireflies. Illustrated with charmingly detailed watercolor paintings, the book is a worthy successor to Frog and Toad or George and Martha.
Lilly's Big Day Written and Illustrated by Kevin Henkes. Greenwillow ($16.99) Ages 5+ Remember Lily from Lily's Purple Plastic Purse? She's returned with Lily's beloved teacher, Mr. Slinger is getting married. Lily knows for sure she is going to be the flower girl so she practices and practices. Unfortunately, Mr. Slinger's niece Ginger will be doing that job. Although Lily refuses to believe the truth, the situation is resolved in kind and surprising way.
Flotsam Written and Illustrated by David Wiesner. Clarion Books ($17) Ages 5+ Caldecott winning illustrator for Three Pigs weaves an equally extraordinary tale. A mysterious camera has floated ashore and is discovered by a budding boy biologist. When he develops the film he sees bewildering photographs of uncanny deep sea creatures as well as portraits of people from long ago.
It's not the Stork: A Book About Girls, Boys, Babies, Bodies, Families, and Friends Written Robie Harris. Illustrated by Michael Emberly Candlewick ($16.99) Ages 4+ "Do you ever wonder how you were made?" asks Bird. "I wonder how the moon was made." answers Bee. Emberly's humorous cartoons and Harris's matter-of-fact language present the answers to the questions that young inquiring minds most want to know.
Mammoths on the Move Written by Lisa Wheeler. Illustrated by Kurt Cyrus. Harcourt ($16) Ages 4+
"Stepping, stomping, marching, tromping--Watch out, wooly mammoths!" Rhyming text sings while dramatic scratchboard and watercolor paintings portray the migratory journey of these fascinating, prehistoric creatures.
Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom Written by Carole Boston Weatherford. Illustrated by Kadir Nelson. Hyperion ($15.99) Ages 6+ Harriet Tubman's courageous journeys shepherding escaped slaves North is lyrically told and illustrated by luminous paintings with spiritual foundations.
Clementine Written by Sara Pennypacker. Illustrated by Marla Frazee. Hyperion ($14.95) Ages 6+ Third-grader Clementine is not an easy child. She has the best intentions that often go wrong. Short chapters, simple language and a unique point-of-view all come together in a story about family and friends, school and home. This is a joy to read-aloud.
Once I Ate A Pie Written by Patricia MacLachlan and Emily MacLachlan Charest. Illustrated by Katy Schnieder. Harper. ($15.99) Ages 5+ "I am not thin, but I am beautiful." says Mr. Beefy, a self-satisfied pug. Timeless oil portraits of variety canine breeds are paired with brief, humorous and poignant first-person poems. Each poem captures the voice of the dog (manic, deadpan, slothful, or eager) and its relationship with its caregivers, companions, and home.
Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane Written by Kate DiCamillo Illustrated by Bagram Ibatoulline. Candlewick ($18.99) Ages 7+ The two time Newbery Award winning author of Tale of Desperaux and Because of Winn Dixie tells a beautiful new classic about a three- foot-tall rabbit made almost entirely of china. Edward is beloved by Abiline Tulane, a fisherman and his wife, a hobo and his dog, an ailing little girl and her brother. This story of a self-centered rabbit is related with a straightforward tone tinged with humor.
My favorite read aloud Thelonious Monster's Sky-High Fly Pie:A revolting rhyme Written by Judy Sierra. Illustrated by Edward Koren. Knopf ($16.95) Ages 5+ An endearing, fuzzy monster creates an awfully (un)appetizing tart made of hundreds and thousands of succulent flies. The tongue-twisting, delightfully irreverent verse is paired with black-and-white squiggly line drawings accented in bright lime green.
Wolves Written and illustrated by Emily Gravett. Simon and Schuster ($15.95) Ages 5+ Wolves live in packs. Wolves can survive anywhere. Wolves eat mainly meat. Facts about wolves are related matter-of-factly as the animated charcoal-and-paper illustrations communicate that the rabbit who is reading the book might be in imminent danger. The author assure as that ".no rabbits were eaten during the making of this book."
