BlankThanks Lee for bringing in poetry to this discussion. Several years ago, I collaborated with a middle school English teacher to provide a poetry experience for students who were definitely struggling, and gennerall non-... readers.
I met with the students weekly and brought in poetry books ... from each of the three groupings (which I have used with my undergraduates for years): anthology/single author, anthology/mixed authors, and poem-as-book [i.e., OLD HENRY/Blos].
Then we presented books to the students about how to "make" books ... from pop-up to comic book formats. Students wrote their own poems, created books to hold these poems, and shared with the class (and rest of school). The book SOUL LOOKS BACK IN WONDER (er/ill Tom Feelings) was given to 5 winners (vs. the competitive and often disheartening emotions of just 1 winner).
Students read and read ... one of the more exciting projects of my collaborations over the years.
