I had a small success last week with a struggling reader. She was probably in her forties. She told me she wasn't a reader, but wanted to start reading maybe a half hour every day. I got the impression that her child is struggling in school. Perhaps someone had suggested that she show an interest in reading, to be a model for the child.
She wanted something that would grab her interest, that wasn't too long. As we browsed, she mentioned she liked scary stories. Darren Shan's Cirque du Freak series caught my eye. She took one. The next day, she was back. She'd read the first three chapters, and was very enthusiastic!
Shan uses short sentences and simple vocabulary. And vampires! What more could we want?
