I recommend Whirligig by Paul Fleischman. It is written at a high 4th grade level. The main character is a teenage boy in a highly competitive (socially) private high school. He goes to a party, gets drunk, gets behind the wheel... The plot is simply laid out, the vocab accessible and the story of high interest to that age group. I never received negative feedback on it from 8th graders and I put it in the hands of many a reluctant reader. Lisa
