I'm going to chime in with an oldie, although it probably no longer resonates, thanks to vaccines.
"The Littlest Ballerina" was about a girl whose legs were weakened by polio. Ballet lessons were what made them strong enough, but really, when I read it as a child, it was more about becoming a dancer than about overcoming an illness. I didn't understand the polio aspect of it until I reread it as a nostalgic college student. I doubt it would work with kids in the developed world today, because polio is no longer a major childhood disease.
