A new compelling story about deafness and animal rights is Hurt Go Happy by Ginny Rorby published by Starscape. Joey struggles with trying to cope with school, friends and family by reading lips until she meets Dr. Charles Mansell and his baby chimpanzee, Sukari, who use sign language to communicate. Joey begins to learn to sign and her life opens up for her.
