[CCBC-Net] Portraying disabilites

Some years ago, I heard a "disabled" person comment that it was good for children to see those who are physically handicapped in one way or another portrayed in everyday situations in books that don't center upon disabilities. Therefore, when I wrote Hannah's Bookmobile Christmas (Holt, 2001) I included a young patron in a wheelchair visiting the bookmobile. (It helped that I knew some bookmobiles are equipped with wheelchair lifts.) Gabi Swiakowtskai's illustration shows just the handles of his chair, but an attractive chest-up portrait of the boy. My text does not mention the reason that the boy needs a wheelchair. No one has ever commented on this character, to my knowledge, but I hope at least some children have noticed and been heartened by the inclusion. Sally Derby (Whoosh Went the Wind!
