What a good question. I've wondered if libraries in--say--the Alaskan bush might be able to use books from our collections, but I haven't ever asked them, so I don't know for sure! I also don't know of a clearinghouse for this type of thing but would love to hear if someone else does. Thanks, CEJ

I just read the ARC of /Looking for Bapu/ by Anjali Banerjee. The story
begins in Seattle two weeks after the towers fell, and gently and with humor deals with issues of prejudice amidst daily life. I thought Banerjee did a lovely job of weaving the primary theme of the book -- the death of Anu's beloved Bapu (his grandfather) and Anu's struggle to accept and integrate that loss -- within the weft of Pacific northwest life and the paranoias/fear/prejudice that jumped into the open following 9/11.
I note from the back that /Looking for Bapu/ is due out October 10 -- so, soon!

Dear all,
I manage an electronic discussion group for 37 curators of children's literature collections in several countries. I inherited this group from Dee Jones when she retired as curator of the de Grummond Collection. If you have announcements that you think would interest these curators, I will be glad to post them.
Here is an announcement that I was asked to post to the curators, and I thought that it might be of interest to the CCBC community, too.
The Stanford University Libraries & Academic Information Resources will be hosting "A Centenary Celebration of Crockett Johnson" on Oct. 20-21,
2006 in the Bender Room, 5th Floor Bing Wing, Green Library. This conference is open to all and has no charges.
The first day, the hundredth anniversary of his birth, is devoted to Crockett Johnson's life and work, featuring Philip Nel his biographer. The second day will explore the role of children's literature collections in academic libraries, both from the curator and the user point of view. Both William Gosling (University of Chicago) and Terri Goldich (University of Connecticut) will be speaking. For more information check out the Web site for the conference at
<http://library.stanford.edu/depts/cubberley/about/cj_conf.html> http://library.stanford.edu/depts/cubberley/about/cj_conf.html
There is also a link to the tentative schedule at
<http://library.stanford.edu/depts/cubberley/about/cj_conf_sched.html> http://library.stanford.edu/depts/cubberley/about/cj_conf_sched.html
I'm planning to attend and hope to see some old friends, and to make some new friends, there.
Best wishes,

I have completely weeded the library at my school. I gave away the books that the kids and staff wanted. Does anyone have any ideas about what to do with the remaining books. I hate the idea of throwing them in the garbage.
Thanks,

I hate to say this, but after a few years at B. Dalton and with the Library, the idea of throwing out used-up books or with little informational value is no longer as repugnant to me as it once was. However, the Library system I now work at sends our discards and un-usable donations to a recycling center.
A good site for weeding can be found at:
http://www.sunlink.ucf.edu/weed/
It's not only helpful, but humorous as well. It's not been updated since 1997, but the information is being kept on the web for people like us who need a little extra incentive.
I'd also recommend reading over this site, but warning, 'tis satire!
