The 2006 Sterling North Legacy Award for Excellence in Children's Literature will be awarded to the renowned children's book author and illustrator, Kevin Henkes, on October 21 during the Edgerton Book Festival in Edgerton, Wisconsin.

The $1,000 award, named after the late author of the Newbery Honor Book, RASCAL, celebrates the 100th anniversary of Sterling North?s birth. It recognizes North?s dedication to excellence in children?s books and Henkes? outstanding contributions in this field.

Both authors were born in Wisconsin, North in Edgerton and Henkes in Racine, and both began writing at an early age. North?s first poem was published when he was eight, and his first adult biography when he was 22. He devoted his entire life to writing and reviewing books. Henkes saw his first picture book published when he was just 20. He is a full-time author and illustrator living in Madison, Wisconsin.

Both North and Henkes have received critical acclaim for their perceptive writing and their ability to convey the depths of children?s emotions. In return they have attracted huge and loyal audiences.

Among Henkes? awards are the ALA/ALSC Caldecott Medal for his KITTEN?S FIRST FULL MOON in 2005, an ALSC Newbery Honor for his OLIVE?S OCEAN in 2004 and an ALSC Caldecott Honor for OWEN in 1994.

North?s RASCAL, in addition to receiving a 1964 Newbery Honor, won young readers? choice awards in eight states ranging from Vermont to Oregon, the Aurianne Award and the Dutton Animal Book Award. RASCAL was named an ALA Notable Book, was published in translations all over the world, sold millions of copies, and was made into a movie by Walt Disney.

North?s boyhood home in Edgerton, where he lived with his pet raccoon, Rascal, has been restored as a museum by the Sterling North Society. Members offer tours of the home and of the surrounding area. For information about the Sterling North Museum and the Sterling North Society, contact www.sterlingnorth.com
