We were delighted to see this message about THE ARRIVAL today, as Arthur A. Levine Books will publish the book (in graphic novel form) in the United States in Fall 2007. And it's just as stunning as Mike promises!

I'm not sure how well American readers are with the work of Australian

illustrator Shaun Tan, but he has a stunning book coming out here in the

next fortnight. The Arrival is a 128 page wordless picture book in a

graphic novel style. It's produced entirley in pencil then subtlely tinted

to add tones and moods. But this is no inky comic!

The Arrival is the story of a migrant family's journey to a new country.

It is, in the true sense of the word, an epic story, the journey of one

family representing the many. Shaun's work often references other images

(not, I hasten to add, in any cheesy po-mo way) so it's not quite possible

to say where the story takes place. Could be New York, could be Melbourne,

could be a place that the artist has created and has drawn us into. There

is also a beguiling interplay between what is left behind and what stays

with the migrant.

The absence of words, particularly over such a long book, lends that

feeling of dislocation, uncertainty, of things being withheld, the same

feeling of coming to a new world.

Suffice to say, when this one washes up your shores, I think you are going

to love The Arrival.
