As the mother of a learning disabled son (couldn't really read until 10th grade) and an elementary school librarian, picture books often saved us!! My son would be in his middle school and high school classes facing really thick textbooks that he couldn't or wouldn't read. At times I read aloud to him and we tried audio books but the text was just overloading him! Picture books provided content and context for him -- serving often like those reading aides most of us used in college --- He is very spacial and artistic so the picture aspects appealed to him and added to his knowledge base. He often pointed out things I had previously missed in pictures and I learned more about it too!
Needless to say, videos really helped him as well, but that's another topic!
Now he is 20 and I am still buying him picture books. The latest was Sabuda's Castle at ALA -- along with bringing him 4 fantasy novels -- He is reading!! He values books even though they were his enemies for so many years. I am thankful every day for picture books and the wonderful artists and authors who publish the wide variety that exists today!
