The name of the book is Faithful Elephants: A True Story of Animals, People, and War by Yukio Tsuchiya,Ted Lewin. I used this book to introduce sixth graders to an alternate view of war. They were almost always stricken by the devastation of war and the overflow of human activity on animals. Children who were unmoved by other reports... almost always were touched by the plight of zoo animals in war.

I forgot to mention that I have used "Hiroshima No Pika", "Sadako and the Thousand Paper Cranes", and "the Thousand Paper Cranes" with both elementary and secondary students. There is a newer book about the elephants in the Tokyo zoo that could be added to that list as well. All of these books are great ways to introduce an alternative point-of-view in a classroom.

What people are ashamed of usually makes a good story.
