[CCBC-Net] middle grade picture books

Prior to the 80s, it was nearly impossible to successfully publish picture books for middle grade/older kids, the feeling being the audience considered them ?baby books.? Now that is much changed and I wonder why. Computers? More interest in the visual world than words? An increasing problem with reading and literacy?

On an indirect but related subject, the close friend of a close friend was hired during the summer to head an excellent private school. A position she did not expect to be offered because she is in her late fifties/early sixties. However...her position...the future for jobs will not be in technology which will be done off shore, and the school should be grounded in a rigorous and well rounded liberal arts education with computer science included but not more important than history, English, etc. While she provided studies about jobs in technology/computer science to support her position she was offered the position because the board believed she is ? a visionary, ? unafraid to go against the grain/trends in current education which will ultimately stand their students in good stead.

Any thoughts about my question? Norma Jean
