With the eighth grade English students, in an extended Civil Rights unit that includes The Land by Mildred Taylor and Witness by Karen Hesse, we have utilized:
Woodson, Jacqueline & E.B. Lewis (ill.). (2001). The Other Side. Putnam. McGill, Alice & Chris K. Soentpiet (ill.). (1999). Molly Bannaky. Hougton Mifflin. Lorbiecki, Maribeth & Wendy Popp (ill.). (1998). Sister Anne's Hands. Dial. Coles, Robert & George Ford (ill.). (1995).The Story of Ruby Bridges. Scholastic Press.
In a poetry unit, along with Bronx Masquerade by Nikki Grimes and 19 Varieties of Gazelle by Naomi Shihab Nye, we use:
Schurtle, Alice & Wendell Minor (ill.). (1999). A Lucky Thing. Harcourt.
My favorite new picture book of the year, and one I will definitely be sharing with the eighth graders this fall is:
LaReau, Kara & Scott Magoon (ill.). (2006). Ugly Fish. Harcourt.
Finally, another one we regularly use with the eighth graders, and one that is a perfect example of a picture book for older readers is:

Krull, Kathleen & Yuyi Morales. (2003). Harvesting Hope: The Story of Cesar Chavez. Harcourt.
It is a mistake to think that many younger kids are going to comprehend such concepts in this book as union organizing. (Some review journals listed this for as young as 2nd grade.) Our own experience over the past 3 years is that even some of the eighth graders have difficulty thoroughly digesting all the information in this incredibly beautiful, important book, award-winning book. It certainly went right over the heads of a fourth grade class to whom I once read it. But talk about an outstanding trade book for use in the classroom with middle school kids studying American history!
