I wrote my first novel, JULIA'S KITCHEN, in the wake of 9/11. My main character is a worrier whose mom and sister die in a house fire. Although 9/11 is purposely never referenced in the book, the theme of dealing with fear and loss is certainly reflective of a post-9/11 world.
Some kids may have always worried about bad things happening, but with 9/11, that worry and fear took a concrete shape for many more children (and adults). I tried to write a story that focused on healing, hope, and the resiliency of the human spirit as an answer not just to 9/11 but also to any senseless tragedy.
I'm looking forward to hearing your opinions about this topic.
Have a great day!
