World lit for high school students - get 'em reading!

Here are two new, Wisconsin-based programs to get high school students to dig into world lit (Don Quixote or Dante's Inferno) and have fun doing it. Forward to interested colleagues.

************ DON QUIXOTE IN WISCONSIN: Deadline Sept 15 Teachers and teams will be selected to participate in the second year of our successful and state-wide project. The project aims to bring Cervantes' classic novel into high school classrooms throughout Wisconsin. Each team will receive a financial award, teaching materials, access to university resources, two teacher colloquia, and a student conference. Contact Jason Cohen, (608) 890-0780 center at humanities.wisc.edu Website: www.humanities.wisc.edu for application.

DANTE'S INFERNO IN WISCONSIN: Deadline Sept 15 Teachers and teams will be selected to pilot Great Texts in Wisconsin project, introducing Dante's epic poem The Inferno into high school classrooms. Selected teams may choose to continue during 07-08. Each team receives a modest stipend, teaching materials, access to university resources, and may participate in two teacher colloquia and a student conference. Scheduled speakers include former US Poet Laureate Robert Pinsky, who will attend the year-end Student Conference and may be involved with students in creative writing and critical thinking.
