Clyde Robert Bulla's books often worked well with my fourth and fifth grade reluctant readers, particularly The Sword in the Tree in hardcover, Shoeshine Girl, and Last Look. The hardcover edition of The Sword in the Tree has a large font, lots of white space on the pages--big margins, but is thick and has the outer appearance of a novel for intermediate students. The story is fast paced, set in medieval times, and has lots of appeal. It was a recommendation I often used with success, particularly for boys. Last Look and Shoeshine Girl are also appealing, thin novels, and not at all babyish.
