Good point, Ellen...Nonfiction deserves a place here too. Two of my very favorite non-fiction books of all time are Russell Freedman's "Kids at Work: Lewis Hine and the Crusade Against Child Labor" and Jerry Stanley's "Children of the Dust Bowl."

Several people have mentioned this issue in passing. I have seen parents and teachers attempt to force fiction on children and teens who are not reluctant readers at all, but their primary interest is in reading for information. There appears to be an entrenched view that nonfiction is not true "literature." I have even had parents of kids in our Summer Reading program say that they did not "count" the time their children spent reading about animals or airplanes, only the time they spent reading
"chapter books." My husband is a software engineer and has probably not

read a novel since college; however, he devours political satire and scientific magazines. He prefers to get "stories" from watching movies.

Ellen.
