I think the most telling statement so far has been from Robin

>I am amazed at the request, " I need a level 3 reader" Not "I am working with a kid who is reading Henry and Mudge but we are looking for something a little more challenging that is funny and has chapters.

Too many adults (teachers but even more so, parents) are trying to make the thing so mechanized. Beat them over the head with phonics till there's no chance that the written word will ever be any fun, then make sure that everything they read (will first of all count for AR) is a little harder than what they just mastered, so they never get the feel of reading easily and with confidence. Then don't let them read what they choose but rather something edifying that will teach them a good moral lesson.

Really, level three readers sound like they were written by a level 3 machine.
