Add to the list of "read alouds" for reluctant readers some of Gary Paulsen's works. As a reading specialist for years, I was able to hook young adolescent readers with Hatchet every time. I'd read aloud ( no voices) and then about chapter four or five, just when the student's had heard most of the relevant vocabulary and had a "sense of the story," and just when they HAD to know what happened next... I'd stop and pull out my multiple copies and help them get going in the book. Gentle Ben, Julie of the Wolves, My SIde of the Mountain and Island of the Blue Dolphins had similar efficacy.
