I'll ditto the Books on Tapes. Years ago my eldest daughter loved to read - but only books that SHE selected. She didn't want anything to do with books she was asked to read. She wasn't a strong reader which is why I think she was "hesitant." When she started 4th grade, she was handed a list for Battle of the Books. I knew she would have a difficult time with some of the titles. I explained that she HAD to read these books for school and suggested that we could get the book AND the book on tape. My requirement was that she had to read along as she listened to the book on tape. After two books, she announced that she didn't need the tapes anymore and then read all 12 or 14 of the other titles. I will never know what caused her hesitancy (her younger sister was/is a strong reader - maybe there was a feeling of competition?). I will say that she gained confidence in herself - maybe picked up speed of reading by listening. She's now in college and is an avid reader. Donna

Today and tomorrow is open announcements on CCBC-Net.
On Thursday, we'll being the August Discussion:
*Reluctant Readers: What Do You Recommend? *As much as we wish every
child would love to read, the truth is that many find reading--or the
thought of reading--anything but appealing. What books do you recommend
for children who /can /read but don't /want /to read? Do you have any
tried and true titles that have helped turn a child who "hates" to read
into a lover of books--or at least one book? We'll spend the month of
August suggesting books to share with reluctant child readers.
