[CCBC-Net] From Disney to Milne

In the case of my own son, the Disney videos of Winnie-the-Pooh (both the old films based on Milne's stories and the newer videos not drawn from the original tales) began his love affair with Christopher Robin and company. However, it was a BBC recorded version of the stories that got him excited about reading the original stories. We moved just before he heard the recording; hearing the stories read by me once we got to our new home provided him with great comfort during a time of transition. He went on to read the stories himself and became a real Pooh afficionado learning about the origin of the stories, the various versions of the stuffed toys, etc. We also saw the original stuffed animals at New York Public Library last summer.

Way back when I was taking young adult literature (early nineteen-eighties), I remember reading studies that movies based on books did lead teens to read the books. There was some controversy floating around the issues that have been discussed here when Disney's very successful Beauty and the Beast came out (early 1990s?). Since many of my middle school students had seen and loved the movie at the time, I sponsored a book discussion group that read McKinley's Beauty. It was a good "gray-area thinking" exercise since the kids had to compare and contrast the book and film version.
