After the premier of the Disney version of "Bambi", sales of hunting licenses for deer hunting dropped something like 37%. An interesting article on the subject of Bambi and hunting can be found at:

I should also like to come to Disney's defense in terms of live action film versions of children's novels. Without the following I would never have sought out and read the book versions:
Polyanna (Haley Mills version) Toby Tyler (book title: Toby Tyler or ten weeks with the circus) Zorro (any film version is actually better than the Macually Johnson book) The Three lives of Thomasina
Granted that they were not truly faithful to the books, they did follow them closely and stayed true in spirit, much more than other studio's treatments of book screenplays. One of the Disney/Jim Henson projects that produced a much better film version of a book was "Muppet's Treasure Island". Having seen just about all the film versions of Treasure Island, I enjoyed this one the most, and it stayed closer to the novel than most versions!
I found on the web that Disney has secured the film rights to many of Judy Blume's novels. I wonder how they will turn out?
