Not to defend Disney too much, but they aren't the only ones to prettify and simplify classics. Gulliver's Travels is to many if not most people only about Lilliputians. And I and my sisters collected several different Cinderella Golden Book-type versions and if there was a Disney edition it was only one of many.
And yes it is frustrating when kids or their parents insist on ONLY the Disney version of anything.

capturing Carroll's sensibility
Disney couldn't hold a cel to Lewis Carroll. The ALICE... books are masterpieces in every way. Unfortunately children I work with shun the books thinking they are for 'babies' due to the Disney film version.
ALICE... would be better read and understood by upper-graders if they had the chance to get the movie from their minds. And soon comes another film treatment of CHARLOTTE'S WEB. Goodbye to another modern classic.
