[CCBC-Net] New versions of old books:

Ah, Disney! I remember a visit to a school library back in the 80s. The librarian (who may have been a volunteer assistant, I don't recall) had just received a copy of Trina Hyman's Cinderella and was very upset that Trina had ruined the story by adding the macabre details of the stepsisters chopping off parts of their feet in order to fit into the glass slipper. The library was an old one, and out of curiosity I asked the woman if she happened to have copies of the old collections of Andersen and Grimm. Sure enough, there they were, with all the "macabre" details. The poor woman was stunned.

Very true, Nancy. I remember an interaction with a young mother who asked me for "Winnie-the-Pooh for a three year old." When I handed her the original Milne, she said, "No, I wanted the version for a three year old." I realized she meant the Disney picture book version. I think she assumed that because the original was a chapter book, it would be too much for her three year old. What a pity.
