[CCBC-Net] Summer books

I, too, think of Robert McCloskey's picture books as perfect summer portraits. Must be the reason I still long to experience an East Coast summer vacation. (Not to mention Gift from the Sea by Anne Morrow Lindbergh!)

I must also share that an illustration from Walt Disney's A Big Golden Book version (Simon and Schuster, copyright 1951) of Alice in Wonderland conjures up a lazy and delectable summer day for me. (Would not the story as well?) It's on the inside title page--a full color of Alice's sister reading to her from under the shade of a big branched tree by a river bank. The memory of this particular illustration prompted me to go and dig the book out from my prized childhood box of books. It had been years but the effect was still the same: I wanted to jump into the picture!
