Mockingbird is the classic eighth-grade novel. Personally I vote for pairing it with Roll of Thunder, Hear My Cry, because they are both lovely novels but their worldviews are so painfully irreconcilable; I think they teach students, in an accessible way, that who we are determines the stories we can tell.
