I?m so liking reading about everyone?s thoughts. Some take me back, some give me ideas for the rest of the season, and some are just great suggestions for anytime.

How about a different tack? Here?s the first paragraph from One Kingdom: Our Lives with Animals by Deborah Noyes, a new book out for middle/high school readers. What Noyes does is ask readers to think about their relationships with animals, but she puts me right in an idyllic summertime mood to do that thinking:

Summer has me thinking about water. Not just its shimmering skin or the foam edge at my feet, littered with sea glass and egg casings, but what the water holds: the glint of scales in streaky light, the scuttle of claw and groping tentacle, and, deeper still, the inky unexplored depths. I?m thinking too of our skins and what they hold ? water, blood and bone, a beating heart ? and things shapeless and vast: identity, spirit, memory.
