On the younger side, there is the delightful graphic novel "Beach Babe" in the BABYMOUSE series. The series is done by brother-and-sister team Jennifer and Matthew Holm and is targeted to that oft-neglected Gr 2-4 girl graphics enthusiast. In "Beach Babe" BabyMouse is off on her long-awaited summer vacation. Throughout the book, her everyday life events are shown in black and white with the rare splotch of pink, usually on her clothes or accessories. But when our little mouse heroine daydreams - which she does A LOT - the pages are washed with pink skies or landscapes. It is a clever technique that allows the
novice reader to keep clear where we are in the story. This time our crinkly-whiskered mouselette rides the waves, morphs into a pink "mermouse", scuba dives and finds a magic bottle on the beach complete with genie. Each story in the series has been wonderful.
