While it isn't specifically about summer, I've read The Witch of Blackbird Pond nearly every August since the 6th grade. As a child, this book helped me prepare for the Wisconsin wintry days that undoubtedly were just around the corner when school started each fall. I loved Kit?s descriptions of tropical Barbados, but I felt more at home in the New England setting that made me long for snow during the dog days of summer. Now, when I pick up this book every August as an adult, I reconnect with a younger Self ? a girl who had endless summer afternoons to read historical fiction in front of circulating fans, but who was ready for school to begin and definitely hopeful for snow.
