I'm glad someone else is a fan of SWALLOWS AND AMAZONS by Arthur Ransome, which I discovered with my sons when they were reissued in paperback in the 1990's. S&A is the first of a wonderful series based on Ransome's childhood summers when he and his siblings were allowed to sail to a small island in the lake on which his family was summering and camp out for weeks at a time. The children--and a pair of sisters they meet--engage in extended make-believe games involving pirates and exploring, etc. Those were the days!
When I was young (as I've mentioned in a different context) I loved Edward Eager's HALF MAGIC series which, as far as I remember, took place over a series of summers. What could be better than finding a magic object or a wishing well that really works or magic by the lake-full or garden-full at the beginning of your summer vacation?
More recent titles taking place in the summer include Hilary McKay's THE EXILES (four sisters sent off to their grandmother's with strict instructions NOT to read--a sentence tantamount to death!), FLEA CIRCUS SUMMER by Cheryl Ware which features a hilarious correspondence involving consumer dissatisfaction, and Brashares' THE SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELLING PANTS.
And I, too, love OLIVE'S OCEAN and THE PENDERWICKS.
All this makes me want to stop typing and start reading.
