While not exclusively a summer story, _Honestly, Katie John!_ (by Mary Calhoun, I believe) opens in the summer and is full of adventures, explorations, and even a fair--all evocative of summer's magical, out-of-time qualities. It was, for me, comfort reading of the highest order. Caroline Jones
