These two books remind me of the glorious expanse of time I had as a kid, to lie around with a book, some lemonade, and a ginger snap or two. An old favorite, and a new:
Weslandia, by Paul Fleischman, illus. by Kevin Hawkes -- this picture book captures the kind of summer that is a complete escape (from society, or the school year), as Wes creates his own civilization in his backyard.
Rules, by Cynthia Lord (Scholastic, 2006) -- a moving coming-of-age story for grades four and up unfolds during a contemporary Maine summer, as 12 year old Catherine is torn between making a good impression on a potential new friend and responsibilities to her autistic brother (for whom she creates rules, such as: no toys in the fishtank. boys take off their shirt to swim, but not their shorts)
