Thanks for mentioning Swallows and Amazons! I think this series by Arthur Ransom is one of the best about "messing about with boats" in the summer. Although I read them as an adult, the books reminded me of idyllic summer fun. The children in the story camp on an island in a lake in the lake country of England. Two pirate girls attack them, beginning an exciting adventure, which is continued in subsequent books. The other Ransom books are about some boys who form a Coot Club in order to protect nesting birds in the Norfolk broads. These books are also excellent.

The boating theme reminds me of the excellent book by Philippa Pearce, Minnow on the Say, which also combines the realism of boating in England on a smallish river with the magical imaginary world that you enter with the protagonist of the book. I think this book has two titles, one English and the other American. Unfortunately, I can't remember the other title, or which is which!
