My all-time summer favorite is Pinky Pye, by Eleanor Estes. An oldie but goodie (first published in 1958) about a family who adopts a kitten with special talents while spending a summer in a beach house on New York's Fire Island. Estes had a fantastic ear for dialogue and a wonderful sense of humor, and portrayed the relationships among siblings so beautifully. Pinky Pye is the sequel to the Newbery Medal winner Ginger Pye.
