A lovely picture book that I have used with 8-10 year old students at the end of the school year is The Raft, written and illustrated by Jim LaMarche. It's about a boy--Nicky--who reluctantly goes to spend the summer with his artistic grandmother, a "river rat." After Nicky discovers a raft with pictures of animals on it, his curiousity is piqued and he begins to explore the flora and fauna of the woods and the water. Together with the text, the artwork is evocative, and always puts me in the mood for reflective summer days.
