Someone has already commented about Chris Rashka's art-related books, and I think someone else mentioned that some of Paul Fleischman's books are written to meter. Has anyone written to extol the marvelous books about music by Walter and Christopher Myers, including BLUES JOURNEY Journey and the new book JAZZ.
Many highly visual books about musicians have been published lately: PLAY, MOZART, PLAY! by Peter Sis is one of them, and so is DIZZY by Jonah Winter & Sean Qualls. STRANGE MR. SATIE by M.T. Anderson & Petra Mathers continues to intrigue me, too, as an apt way to represent the imaginative powers of composer Erik Satie. So do WHAT CHARLIE HEARD by Mordicai Gerstein which is about Charles Ives; and MUSIC FOR THE END OF TIME by Jen Bryant & Beth Peck featuring Olivier Messiaen. I admire fine these books, because I'm already interested in the subject of each one. I hope they find a young audience in one way or another.
Someone referred to Elizabeth Partridge's JOHN LENNON, and if it hasn't been mentioned yet, her substantial work about Woody Guthrie THIS LAND WAS MADE FOR YOU AND ME also deserves attention, as do several other of her well-researched books about artists.
The delightful story SEADOGS: AN EPIC OCEAN OPERETTA is a graphic spoof in which Lisa Wheeler's little dog character goes to a rollicking performance. Aliki's AH, MUSIC! is a splendid, highly visual overall introduction and appreciation. And there's more... oh, so much more...
Ah, the arts, Ginny
