I know this is a little tangential to the discussion of art and artists in books so I will apologize in advance.
While looking through the latest issues of "Booklinks" I came across an article titled "Getting to know Character Who Are Writers" by Lesley Colabucci and Linda T. Parsons. The authors state that "If we want children to share their own stories and incorporate personal writing into their own lives, it is important to introduce them to fiction in which the characters write for real-world and personal purposes." The accompanying bibliography lists many picture books and novels for students elementary school through high school in which the main character is a writer.
Included in this list is "The Landry News" by Andrew Clements. This was a book for middle schoolers that I enjoyed reading very much. It contains a great defense of the First Amendment that will be easily understood by young children. It is also a great read aloud with enough humor to keep students interested while discussing some very fundamental rights. It is also about the process of writing and why we write. These passages should encourage students to write.
