I enjoy "Don't Hold Me Back" by Winfred Rembert, a self-taught artist who carves, hand-tools, and dyes on pieces of leather to create autobiographical art about growing up in the segregated South, hard times and good times alike. Very unusual and accessible "outsider art."

I also enjoy Family Pictures / Cuadros de mi familia by Carmen Lomas Garza, who uses both paint and cut paper to recreate vibrant scenes from her childhood in Texas.

Okay, neither book is sophisticated or "fine artsy," but I find myself poring over the pages and reveling in the fascinating details.
