"Pictures of Hollis Woods" (Patricia Reilly Giff) is an excellent example of a well written and touching story in which the main characters are artists. What is especially touching about this story is that the author "tells" how the use of artistic expression may be an outlet for some people, especially those lacking in other means of self-expression. Through the character of Hollis Woods, Giff shows how one's artistic attempts may not be understood by others but still have a world of meaning for the creator (the "W" picture), the importance of holding onto one's forms of self-expression, and finally the realization of self.
