"Round Buildings, Square Buildings and Buildings that Wiggle Like a Fish" by Philip M. Isaacson is an engaging book about architecture for young readers. What I appreciate most is the author's voice - reading the book is like going on a world tour with a guide who's passionate and informed.
Of a mid-century modern house he writes, "Here is a house that is more glass than wood. Because its windows open whole walls to the out-of-doors, more than light moves through its rooms. The sky and snowstorms, birds and the floating moon, come indoors too."
Clean, spare design and well-chosen color photographs of the Taj Mahal, Hadrian's Wall, a Shaker laundry, a fourteenth century Spanish synagogue and 89 more point out the elements that make each of these structures a work of art. Not a book to use for reports, but rather one that awakens a sense of wonder in the reader.
