[CCBC-Net] Childhood of Famous American series (Books with OrangeCovers)

I also have vivid memories of the "books with orange covers." For me, the strongest memory has to do with the fact that there were some on women, which may be where my own interest in women's history began. Clara Barton and Jesse Fremont come to mind.

Those orange covers made an impression -- perhaps because there weren't many other books out there. I recently heard David Sedaris speak. He's known for asking questions and chatting with folks in the signing line, and as he was signing a book for me, it came up that I wrote historical fiction and nonfiction. His first response? Remembering the "books with the orange covers" he'd read as a kid.

Bonnie Withers was referring to this series (see above), which someone else has already referred to. They horrify people now, but they had their good points. When my husband and I met, one of the ways we bonded was our common love of these books and their orange covers with the silhouettes.
