[CCBC-Net] Reading with the same pleasure as a child

  Micki,
In my post, I had made mention of adult distractions as one of my theories about world-building being different for adults and children, but I took it out because these days, children are more like adults
(overscheduled, overstimulated, harried) than they were when I was young. I absolutely think you're right, though, about that being a factor.
I'm just really interested in the neurological differences, because even though, as Lisa says, I can become so involved in the world of a book that I'm completely immersed, and miss my subway stops (figuratively, since I no longer live in Manhattan!), and get taken far away, the experience is qualitatively different (not inferior, just different in kind) from how it was for me as a child.
I'm going to go poke around on the website Monica suggested, and see if there's anything at all to support my vague theories, or if I'm creating castles in the air.
  Cheers, Elizabeth

P.S. Off-topic: If anyone is going to be on the Cape this weekend, I'll be at Titcomb's and Eight Cousins on Sunday and would love to see some CCBC faces in person.

I've been thinking about this since the question was first raised- I think for me it's as simple as time- I remember long summer days when I could just
relax and read, winter days when I could curl up on a chair and read, nights when I could "sneak" under the blanket-tent... my life was fairly uncomplicated and responsibility free.... now it just seems harder to find the quiet time to just turn off the rest of the world when I read! I don't think it's so much the lack of imagination, it is just increasingly difficult to totally leave everything else behind and
"fall" into the world of the book...multi tasking is also not a friend of the true reader.... I've been trying to come up with a book that really "took me away" as an adult like books did when I was younger. Perhaps POSSESSION... Micki
