Irresistible is right!
BARBAPAPA'S NEW HOUSE by Annette Tison: Discovered as a $1.95 Scholastic Book Club paperback which became very well worn by my two children. Teaches compassion, sharing, inclusion, diversity, cooperation, peaceful conflict resolution, and many other things, none of which drives the story.
BAGTHORPE SERIES by Helen Cresswell, LAST OF THE REALLY GREAT WHANGDOODLES by Julie Andrews Edwards and A WRINKLE IN TIME by Madeleine L'Engle: These books were favorites of my daughter. They are part of a list of books that she asked me to mail to her to read in between studying for her Bar Exam to help her de-stress.
NANCY DREW MYSTERIES: Like several other writers, I couldn't get enough of them as a child.
MIKE MULLIGAN AND HIS STEAM SHOVEL, by Virginia Lee Burton: My poor mother must have read this story to me at least 100 times. What a satisfying resolution the story has!
RIKKI-TIKKI-TAVI from Rudyard Kipling's Jungle Book: My poor mother must also have read this one to me at least 100 times. Another satisfying resolution.
LITTLE WOMEN by Louisa M. Alcott and HEIDI by Johanna Spyri: I have two very well worn copies that belonged to my mother, an avid reader. Clearly, she read and re-read these many times in the 1920s and 1930s.
