Don't know if it actually "changed" my life - but the book that I completely remember being entranced by in third grade was one that my teacher read to the class - The Golden Impala. Forty years after the fact, I can't even figure out who the author is - but I do remember that book!
The other book - that DID change my life - was Walt Disney's Cinderella. Not great literature, needless to say.....but because my father was willing to read it me over and over and over, I was able to read when I went to kindergarten.

When I asked my daughter (who isn't a child anymore), she immediately replied, "Into Thin Air." Her 13 year old son promptly seconded that as
being a "really cool" book.
