Well, I know that I haven't lost the gift of getting lost in a book. And now know from this thread that it is a gift. The highest compliment that I can give a book is that I missed my subway stop and just added twenty minutes to my commute backtracking to work or home. Great books have the ability to transport me from literally physical pain.Twenty years ago I quit smoking because I couldn't be bothered to stop reading and go to the deli for a new pack.

Thinking more about rereading. Every year I choose a book that I can stand rereading aloud to four classes. Books that I discover something new in each reading. I read the book, then I think, oh is this the one. Then I reread to evaluate age appropriateness and could I stand reading it aloud over and over. Because of Win Dixie was one. I always choose a brand new book that I received in galley. Oh that Harry Potter. By Winter break all the kids had their own copies and some were even mouthing the words along with me. At the end of the year when the 3rd graders were discussing what they would look forward to in the next school year, I was not so sorry to inform them ( to great wailing and that's not fairing) that Harry Potter would not be the book that would read aloud, that I always select something new that they haven't read.
