[CCBC-Net] books that changed my life

Suzi Steffen inspired me to respond. She said, "The first book that changed my life was ELLEN'S LITTLE FISHPOND, the first book I read on my own (when I was 2 1/2). I clearly remember that day and exactly where I was when the words made sense." I too remember the first time I found myself READING--it was exhilarating. My older brother had decided I was ready to read, and sat me on his lap with an old discarded library book--a Quinlan Reader called Tots and Toys (copyright 1949!) The lack of plot didn't matter--that book was my magic key. It is still on my bookshelf, treasured. Believe it or not, Go, Dog Go! was also profound for me. As a library student I can discern that it was a great tool for learning to read both the picures and the words. As I child, I simply found the carefree dogs wildy entertaining, especially in the treetop party scene!
